Students Ending Slavery

Over the last two years, I have been teaching a seminar entitled "From Douglass to Django: Representing North American Slavery in Literature and Film", which directly facilitates research-led teaching. With my students, I have started the first student-driven “Students Ending Slavery Campus Chapter” in Ireland. Currently, we are working on a cooperation with UCC’s French Department and on becoming an official UCC society.

A group of very dedicated students got together to set the foundation for the first Irish Students Ending Slavery Chapter at University College Cork in 2016.

Our goal is to raise awareness and promote action by opinion makers, decision makers and the public on a local and regional level. Together, we aim to convince governments, international development organizations, businesses and the Irish population to implement key changes required for global eradication.

We aim to spark discussion by helping our members and new members develop a deeper understanding of modern-day as well as historical slavery. Moreover, we want to create a new space for interdisciplinary dialogue to discuss slavery, racism and related topics such as discrimination, human rights and sexual violence.

We are hoping to create a richer environment by following a transmedia, transgenre approach and by sharing and discussing resources such as film, talks, literature and case studies with our members and the public.
